Building Apps For Yourself
I've been on a break from building software for other people and finally felt like building something for myself. This is an update on the habits app I have been working on.
I've finished a basic version that shows you a contribution chart for each habit you want to begin working on. It took me 2 weeks to get to a spot that I really felt good about. Through the process I also considered that I would be building more personal apps to make my life easier. So I will host any future apps on this domain (subject to change): https://habits-fe.vercel.app/
I mostly struggled with the hosting. I originally wanted to host this on GCP Cloud Run, but I am using SQLite which requires a docker volume to work properly as a SQLite database is simply a file. So I opted for another serverless solution in Fly.io that I could get up and running much quicker.
I had a lot of fun building with Golang, Docker, SQLite, and React + Vite + TypeScript. I wouldn't say it is the most robust stack, but I knew I didn't need something huge to build a small app like this.
The only change I feel is necessary is having a vertical contribution chart on mobile, but this would require me to build a custom component which might take me another day or two. Nonetheless I'm happy with this and plan to track my habits everyday with my habits app.
Food For the Soul
I recently made this recipe by Derek Sarno and, as a non-vegetarian, I have to say it was remarkable. It wasn't overly complex, there was very little clean up, and it tasted great.
I used to not prioritize flavor when cooking, because my goal was to gain muscle and food was nothing more than a tool to do so. Now that I am eating with no dietary restriction besides avoiding heavily processed foods and junk, I have found Mr. Sarno's channel to helpful for my eating preferences.
Try this out even if you aren't vegetarian, you could grill some chicken, dice it up, and throw it in with the chickpeas and there's even more protein for you.
Mini DJ Controller
As many men in their 20's I've been diving into electronic music. The sub genres I stick to are drum & bass, house, and jungle. I used to listen to some Skrillex as a youth, but after watching this Boiler Room featuring Fred again... I was all in.
I have recently come across this tiny dj controller that has been on my mind for some time now. There's something about it that draws me and I'm not even a DJ. Do you see how it is very small and cutesy? Very demure.
I've had some fun playing around with the djay app on my iPhone. This is something that might get me into a new hobby. That's all I got for today. Peace.
